Mangaluru: This mid-sized village in Puttur taluk – Perabe – could well be on its way to emerging as the first solar village in Dakshina Kannada district.Making efforts to propel Perabe to this coveted standing by March-end is Jana Shikshana Trust, an NGO. This is in line with a stand taken by the DK district administration to push for solar energy utilization in individual households through solar roof top installations.N Sheena Shetty, convener, solar energy abhiyan of Jana Shikshana Trust, and formerly ombudsman, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act said that out of 1,272 houses in the village in Puttur taluk, more than 500 plus villages have been provided with two lights and a mobile charger facility by drawing fund from various sources, including donors. We are making all out efforts to cover the remaining houses by March-end,” he stated.
Sheena Shetty said that the NGO has plans to cover all 1,400 anganawadis with solar lights in future.Plans are on to provide them with a fan and two lights. The NGO has already provided two anganawadis in the district with the facility now. A solar unit that can power a fan and two lights now cost Rs. 20,900. “We have approached a donor for funds to connect 50 anganwadis,” he said adding when connection is taken on a mass scale, cost might reduce to Rs 11,000.
