Solar market: India may overtake Japan next year
The slowdown in solar power installations in Japan can propel India to becoming the third largest solar market next year in terms of installations, according to forecasts by Mercom Capital Group. In a report, the clean energy communications and consulting firm said Japan is seeing structural problems such as grid connection, curtailment and demand issues. As the country readjusts and solar installations slow, India, with a strong project pipeline, can move up to the third spot after China and the US in 2017, Mercom says. Power generation from new installations in India is estimated to double from around 4 gigawatts (GW) now to almost 9GW next year, whereas Japan is forecast to see a drop in capacity additions.
