The government today approved an expenditure of Rs 8,100 crore to support solar power projects that will jack up the capacity of this sector to 40,000MW from 20,000MW by 2019-20.
“The cabinet committee on economic affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today approved the enhancement of capacity to 40,000MW from 20,000MW of the Scheme for Development of Solar Parks and Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects,” an official statement said.
The enhanced capacity will ensure at least 50 solar parks are set up each with a capacity of 500MW and above in various parts of the country. Smaller parks in the Himalayan and other hilly states, where acquiring contiguous land may be difficult because of the difficult terrain, will also be considered under the scheme.
The capacity of the scheme has been enhanced after considering the demand for additional parks from states. The solar parks and power projects will be set up by 2019-20 with the central government’s financial support of Rs 8,100 crore.
