Welcome to the Firstgreen Sustainability Academy course on ” Introduction to Green Buildings”. This course is designed for beginners who wish to gain knowledge on green buildings such as students and recent graduates.  This is also useful course to the building professionals who want to get acquainted to the green building concepts and dont know where to start.

This course requires no such specific background. People opting for this course can be from any background from a building professional to a home maker wanting to learn about ‘What a green building is?’. After completing this course, learners will have a basic knowledge of green buildings and can explore subsequent courses by Firstgreen Sustainability Academy.

Introduction to Green Buildings

With building construction and its operations being the biggest contributors to climate change and global warming, it isn’t surprising that green buildings are the need of the hour. Building industry is also capable of helping in the fight for climate change by achieving overall building efficiency, be it for energy, water, waste or occupant comfort.

You will learn about different standards and benchmarks that are used today to ‘measure’ a green building. The course has majorly 4 small modules which are elaborated on the right.

Module 1: What is a Green Building?

Buildings have a big impact on the environment. The construction and renovation of buildings uses precious natural resources. Most of these resources are non-renewable and hence contribute to climate change.

Green Building is a practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle, from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and destruction.

Green Buildings have certain environmental, social and economic benefits such as improvement in air and water quality, enhance occupant comfort and health, reduction in operations cost and improving the overall quality of life.

Module 2: What makes a Green building 'Sustainable?

Location of site is very crucial for a building to be sustainable. It reduces the carbon emissions if sited along the existing transit system.

You will learn about the environmental impact of buildings, the meaning of green building, how the idea came into existence and what are the key benefits of green buildings.

Module 2

What makes a green building 'Sustainable'?

You will learn about the various aspects of a green building mainly on 6 key points i.e Site and location, Water performance, Energy efficiency, Materials, Indoor air quality, and Occupant comfort and health.

Module 3

How to measure the 'Green-ness' of a green building?

You will learn about certain metrics used to measure green building performance which are used to perform comparative analysis.

Module 4

Green Rating Systems

Lastly, we will discuss the prevailing Green Building rating systems for Indian as well as International context.

Dr. Vashishtha is the founder and CEO of Firstgreen Consulting. Dr. Vashishtha overseas the project origination, structuring and PPA negotiation for various clients in C&I sector as well as utility sector. Prior to FIrstgreen he has been working with Suzlon roup and DLF for developing solar and wind assets. Over the years, Dr. Vashishtha has worked across the value chain in the renewable energy domain along with various stakeholders

Sonali is a Green Building Consultant at Firstgreen. She is an undergraduate architect from Aayojan school of architecture. Sonali has a keen interest in green architecture and her aim is to help minimize the effect of architecture on the environment.
