Introduction to Green Buildings
With building construction and its operations being the biggest contributors to climate change and global warming, it isn’t surprising that green buildings are the need of the hour. Building industry is also capable of helping in the fight for climate change by achieving overall building efficiency, be it for energy, water, waste or occupant comfort.
You will learn about different standards and benchmarks that are used today to ‘measure’ a green building. The course has majorly 4 small modules which are elaborated on the right.
Module 1: What is a Green Building?
Buildings have a big impact on the environment. The construction and renovation of buildings uses precious natural resources. Most of these resources are non-renewable and hence contribute to climate change.
Green Building is a practice of creating structures and using processes that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building’s life-cycle, from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and destruction.
Green Buildings have certain environmental, social and economic benefits such as improvement in air and water quality, enhance occupant comfort and health, reduction in operations cost and improving the overall quality of life.
Module 2: What makes a Green building 'Sustainable?
Location of site is very crucial for a building to be sustainable. It reduces the carbon emissions if sited along the existing transit system.
